Sun Safety

sun safety

Sun Safety is crucial for our children both when they are outside playing on those beautiful sunny days and enjoying time in the outdoors when it appears a bit cloudy. Invest in your child's sun safety when they are young and develop life long habits while teaching them important information associated with sun safety they will benefit from for years to come.

We all love to spend time in the outdoors and enjoy the warmth of the sun. When the days become longer and brighter and the temperature begins to warm up it's time to think about sun safety. The time our children spend playing outside adds to their physical health and overall well-being. We all know that too much sun exposure is problematic; however, the sun is a natural source of Vitamin D that is vital to a strong immune system, the absorption of calcium and strong healthy bones so it's important to strike a balance between some nourishing sun exposure and too much sun that can cause painful sun burns and put ourselves and children at greater risk of skin cancer in our lives.

Important Sun Safety Info

  • NCS image In May 2000, the National Institutes of Health added solar ultraviolet radiation and exposure to sun lamps and sun beds to the list of identified carcinogens in America.

When our skin is over exposed to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, a sunburn can result. It is very important to note that each child will have a different tolerance to the sun. For example, children who have light coloured hair, such as blonde or red will get a sunburn in much less time outside compared to other children with darker hair and skin tones. In addition, the type of activity or time of day you're outside can make a very big different in how much sun exposure is too much. For example, if your child is swimming in a pool, lake or the ocean, the reflection of the UV rays can cause a sunburn much quicker than other activities.
