New Child Safety

What's the connection between New Child Safety and the 4-Hour Workweek Project Blog?
http://4hrwwproject.wordpress.com

This is a great question and we thought we best clarify the situation so both our NCS site visitors and our blog readers will understand what this project is all about.

I first read Timothy Ferriss' book in 2007 when it first came out and at that time I was working for an academic institution in the area of health research. My dilemma at that time was that I really liked the people I was working with, loved the medical research and teaching I did and overall really enjoyed my job. However, I never adapted well to the oppressive show-up and work in the office schedule nor could I appreciate the 'way' some work tasks had to be completed. After a few years, I had a burning desire to get out on my own and I truly believed that starting my own independent consulting business would be the answer.

Well in Part I was right but also wrong.

What the shift to working as a consultant did accomplish was changing my schedule so I could structure my work days however I wanted and in a way that worked best for me. This was a very exciting time and almost from the very beginning I had great success. The other important issue that immediately got resolved was how I did my project tasks - no one micro-managing me! And, given I already have a strong work ethic, organize very well and am quite disciplined (in the area of work anyway) along with having a type A personality, this was simply heaven.

So, what happened?

For the first little while all was well. I managed to expand the consulting business and went over 2 years without having to solicit any work - an excellent measure of success in the consulting world - but here's the corker - I hit a glass ceiling. I say glass because I did not see this coming in any way. I had lots of work, great clients, my own schedule, did tasks both when and they way I wanted to BUT, I could not grow things any more in the business unless I hired employees and/or other consultants - this lead to managing human resources, spending too much time discussing and following-up on tasks that would have been quicker to do myself. Along with far too much conversation with others about the how or way I wanted particular tasks done. I either had to become a micro-manager myself, which I detest or find another solution. Thus, I ended up 'working' more, earning less and having less and less time.

So, what did I do?

I started another business of course! I kept as many clients as I could do work for well on my own with a very close groups of colleagues, who did some work for me from time-to-time and decided I would change everything over the next couple of years.

Enter New Child Safety

My partner, myself and certain family members went to work on establishing our new online web-based project, which is focused on child safety, health and well-being. We began throwing ourselves into this while each of us doing our 'other' jobs. Things are going extremely well, it's a passion of ours so motivation is high and from a professional perspective the angle of wellness fits perfectly with my love for research and particularly in the area of child health and wellness. In addition, my partner is the security specialist and one child the technological guru behind the endeavor so we're all very happy and enjoy the opportunity to work together.

Excited But Exhausted and Very Little Time

I found my original copy of the 4-Hour Workweek on my son's bookshelf while visiting and voila! I immediately thought about what I had learned from the first read of Timothy Ferriss' book and knew I had to re-read both that copy and then the updated and expanded edition

Do I (We) Feel the 4-Hour Workweek With Solve All the Issues?

Of course not - that would be ridiculous. And I really have an issue with those who give this book a negative review because it did not work. It's not going to do anything for you if you just read it - we must incorporate the techniques and strategies that are right for each of us to make simple and complex changes to our lives to add to the over quality of life. This requires doing not just reading. For some, getting to the 'doing' part will never happen, I know I was there for 2 years.

2010 is about the doing

This is why I (we) decided to do this blog. It's really a personal commitment for one year to work through the thoughts, excuses, procrastination and learn the tips and techniques Ferriss offers to make and create change. Have our successful careers and family business but also have more free time.

We had a blog reader who gave us this analogy and I think it's just perfect:
"If we simply look at someone else's car - it does not take us anywhere. (read the book - no action). If we get in someone else's car and do exactly what they do -we end up at THEIR destination. (Read the book - with blind thoughtless action). We must understand that if we acquire our own automobile, one that suits our needs - WE can drive to where we want to go! (read the book create you dreamline).

Thanks for reading and I hope we've answered the question what is the connection between your 4-Hour Workweek Project and the New Child Safety website, if you would like to follow our blog for this project visit, http://4hrwwproject.wordpress.com/
