Sun Safety and Sun Protection
Many skin cancer occurrences we suffer from when we are adults are directly linked to the sunburns we receive as children. There are many different reasons why we get sunburns and sometimes even when we're using sun safety products. Reasons include using the incorrect sunscreen or not re-applying often enough, especially if we are in the water.
Common Sun Screen Mistakes:
- Using a low SPF sunscreen or tanning oils.
- Not applying sunscreen correctly -- this includes applying sun screen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure.
- Not reapplying sun screen after excessive sweating or swimming.
- Using a sun screen that is not water resistant.
- Not applying enough sun screen.
A recent study of common sun screen products available on the market showed the following to best the most effective brands.
- Up & Up Sport Continuous SPF 30, by Target
- Walgreens Sport Continuous SPF 50
- Banana Boat Sport Performance Continuous SPF 30
- Aveeno Continuous Protection SPF 50
