We cannot stress enough the importance of window and balcony safety for your children. As we enjoy better weather in many parts of the world we are able to get the windows and patio doors open to let in the warm fresh air, this is
a wonderful time of year after many months of cold temperatures and snow. However, this poses a risk to our children of falls and injuries. It is very important to have proper window guards or window locks installed to prevent a child from
falling through screens and suffering very serious injuries or even a fatal accident.
The Niagara Region public health in Ontario,
Canada has a great web-page dedicated to the importance of this topic and we encourage all parents to make a visit and read their postings. It is vital to understand the difference between window locks for home security and window guards that
prevent people of approximately 150 pounds or less from falling through an open window. We can set a good example by role-modeling safety around open windows and balconies such as never leaving a child unattended and not encouraging play in
such areas. There are also a number of door alarms that let you know if your child has opened a balcony door and may get out on to a balcony without supervision. For more information on this important topic have a read through our
child safety window locks page too and stay informed on this risk in our homes to children who both live with us or who may be visiting.
