Swimming Pool Season is Upon Us: Safety Before Swimming

swimming pool safety The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) has an excellent concept called "layers of protection" to prevent drownings and keep children safe. Unfortunately with pool season hitting high season shortly, we will hear about a child who will drown either in their own pool, in a neighbour's pool or at a community facility. Each and ever one of these incidents is a preventable accident and we encourage all pool owners and parents who will have children swimming at family or friends pool to take a few minutes and ensure safety measures are in place.
The idea from the NDPA is that there be a number of barriers between children and the pool in any home. There are a number of devices and safety precautions including: door alarms that lead to the backyard, child safety pool fence, pool covers and swimming pool alarms that send a loud signal if a child enters the water. Take a few minutes to become familiar with what you need in your home. Also, when your child is visiting a friend's home or even staying over-night, make sure you know whether or not there is a pool on the premises and if so, what safety devices and rules is your child to adhere to -talk about this topic, role mode swimming pool safety and prevent these terrible accidents from occurring.
An additional area of concern are public facilities such as theme parks or specifically water parks. The safety issue here is not only safe swimming and water play but also keeping our children safe from getting lost or approached by strangers. First and foremost become familiar with the facility where you and your family will be spending time, know what to do and who to contact immediately if you should be unable to locate someone in your family.
