Sun Safety Releases
Where you live can effect your Sun Safety Knowledge
The American Academy of Dermatology recently released the results of a large study that looked at where in the United States people were most knowledgeable about sun safety. The cities of Hartford, Salt Lake City and Denver did among the best regarding sun safety whereas Cleveland, Chicago and Pittsburgh showed less understanding and awareness about sun safety. This is an extremely important topic and one we parents must stay informed about. There is clear cut evidence that the sun exposure we receive as children has a direct affect on our skin and overall health as adults. We want to emphasize the important things parents must do for their children:
- Use sunscreen with an SPF protection of at least 30. Make sure it's waterproof and re-apply often
- For young children, or children with sensitive skin use protective clothing
- When possible, stay out of the sun mid-day
- Ask about your child's day-care, pre-school or school procedures for allowing enough time or providing assistance to children applying sunscreen before outside activities
- Talk to you teenage children about the dangers of tanning beds
- Importantly, role model sun safety for your children, do not tell them it is OK for you to be out in the sun without protection, yet they must adhere - it's a family rule
- Make sure other caregivers and family members who supervise your children understand and follow your sun safety rules
