  Having a computer is a must in the most households. There are many threats to be cautious of with respect to a computer, follow this check this to ensure your computer and your family are safe.

  • Keep all computers in one workstation in the home.
  • Make sure that the computer is installed with an up-to-date antivirus.
  • Never use the Internet without a firewall.
  • Use strong passwords for your computer and Internet accounts.
  • Always password-protect your personal information.
  • Never give out or put your passwords in writing.
  • If using a public computer, always log out of your accounts.
  • Always shut down your computer after use.
  • Consult your Internet Service Provider for more assistance.

• Personal Safety

  The Internet is a vast interconnected source of information, our personal information is important for a number of very obvious reasons. Keeping our personal information from falling into the wrong hands can be a challenge. Use this personal safety checklist to help ensure you and other members of your family are protected online.

  • First, never EVER share your personal information online.
  • Be aware that online communication is never private.
  • Never accept contact, gifts or meetings with strangers online.
  • Involve your children in Internet safety measures.
  • Know that you have the authority of closing your child's online accounts.
  • Block all websites that contain pornographic material.
  • Keep track of credit card transactions and telephone bills.
  • Never send photographs of yourself online.

• MySpace Safety

  When selecting a baby gate for stairs there are a few unique challenges and considerations that should be made prior to purchasing a gate.

  • First and foremost, open your own MySpace or other social networking account to familiarize with the sites.
  • Remind your child that MySpace is a public website.
  • Do not allow your child to lie about their age to sign up to MySpace
  • Inform your child that people do lie on the Internet.
  • Show your child how to present themselves online.

• Chat Room Safety

  Teach your children as soon as he or she starts using a computer about how to interact with other people especially strangers when in chat rooms. It's a very common feature of many website so don't think your child won't stumble across a chat room unexpectedly.

  • Always put your chat settings on the option to save all conversations.
  • Always decline all requests for personal information.
  • Always use usernames or nicknames that have no relationship to your real name.
  • Always report any case of chat room harassment to the authorities.
  • Never allow your child to meet a chatting acquaintance without your accompaniment.
  • Apply these same rules when chatting on mobile phones.

• Cyber Bullying

  • Be kind and sympathize with your child.
  • Report the cyber bullying to the police as soon as you know about it.
  • Consult your child's school counselor for help.
